Hyaluronic Acid (HA)
Hyaluronic acid, also known as hyaluronan, is a naturally occurring substance known for its amazing capacity to attract and hold up to 1000 times its weight in moisture.
In the human body, hyaluronic acid is found in the eyes, skin and joints/ connective tissues. Unlike AHAs and BHAs, Hyaluronic Acid is not an exfoliating acid. It is actually a glycosaminoglycan, (a vital naturally occurring sugar molecule that forms part of skin’s extracellular matrix). As the main glycosaminoglycan in skin, hyaluronic acid works to keep every aspect of skin stable, safeguarded, and constantly renewed. It also has antioxidant properties. It works by replenishing skin to enhance a healthy, supple look and feel.
Hyaluronic acid is a humectant, so it is able to draw moisture from its surroundings. It has the ability to help boost hydration for all skin types; especially beneficial for dry or dehydrated skin. It increases moisture content and revitalises skin’s outer surface layers, so they look and feel softer, smoother and radiantly hydrated, which in turn instantly improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Hyaluronic acid’s moisture-binding ability is especially important when it comes to skin ageing. When young, our skin can hold onto water and retain a balanced amount of moisture. It loses this ability as we age when levels of HA, collagen and elastin decrease. The result is a visible loss of firmness, pliability, and a diminished appearance of plumpness and suppleness. Hyaluronic acid therefore has powerful anti-ageing properties.
Hyaluronic acid is incredibly gentle and suitable for all skin types, even the most sensitive, redness-prone skin. Due to its natural calming benefit, it is also suitable for breakout-prone skin. For an HA containing serum/ formulation to deliver both instant and long-lasting positive effects, it is best to use one with a combination of molecular weights.
‘Low’ and ‘medium’ molecular weight HA penetrates deeper into the epidermis, providing maximum below the surface hydration and in turn rehydrating skin cells over time. ‘High’ molecular weight HA delivers immediate intensive hydration to the surface of the skin for an instant smoothing and firming effect.
Sodium hyaluronate is a salt derived from hyaluronic acid. It is beneficial in the same way that hyaluronic acid for skin is, but with an added advantage; skin absorbs it more easily than it does hyaluronic acid.
AB Skincare uses a 3-molecular weight form of HA (sodium hyaluronate) and this can be found in Biotech Supreme Pressed Serum.
Jasmine Flower Extract (Jasminum Grandiflorum)
Jasmine is a genus of shrubs and vines that belong to the olive family. It contains around 200 species native to tropical and warm temperate regions of Asia, Africa, and Australia. It also works to heal wounds, soothe fine lines and wrinkles, ease psoriasis symptoms and ward off infections.
One theory behind jojoba oil as an effective acne treatment is that jojoba oil signals skin to balance itself. Technically a wax ester instead of an oil, jojoba oil resembles human sebum. Sebum is a waxy, oily substance on the skin. Overproduction or blocked sebum can cause acne. So when jojoba oil is applied, skin gets the message that it doesn’t need to produce more sebum.

The root extract contains Glycyrrhizin, Glabridin, Liquiritin and Licochalcone A (from Glabridin) which have powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits. Glabridin inhibits the production of tyrosinase (an enzyme that triggers melanin production) and helps diminish dark spots/ hyperpigmentation issues from UV damage or scarring. Glycyrrhizin is an antioxidant that decreases reactive oxygen species, which ages and discolours skin. It is also anti-inflammatory, so reduces redness and calms inflamed/ irritated skin. Licochalcone A inhibits two inflammatory markers that trigger the inflammatory cascade and may have the added benefit of regulating oil production. Liquiritin brightens, evens skin tone and helps to disperse and remove existing melanin in the skin. This powerful extract is a natural alternative to achieve a visibly more even complexion.

Marine Bamboo (Himanthalia Elongata)
Found in the north east Atlantic Ocean and North Sea, Marine Bamboo is an enriched fraction of fucosterol and phyco-carotenoids extracted from the brown seaweed, Himanthalia Elongata. In the algae, these substances are involved in the fight against the negative side effects of ageing and sun.
UV, blue light and Infra-Red type A generate ROS and promote MMP1 within the skin, leading to photo-ageing. Blue light (400–420 nm) in particular leads to oxidative stress. This induces inflammatory cytokines, increases the expression of matrix degrading enzymes (MMP-1) and decreases the anti-oxidative capacity of fibroblast. It also inhibits its proliferation and induces skin darkening.
Marine Bamboo shows an absorption maximum rate in the 400 to 430 nm wavelength range, focuses on the toxic high-energy wavelengths responsible of blue light skin damage. It protects against collagen destruction and maintains fibroblast activity by inhibiting MMP-1 and reducing the damage caused by Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS). It also promotes collagen and elastin synthesis in ageing cells.
In-vivo studies that after 28 days, 3% Marine Bamboo TG versus a placebo cream offers an 8% increase in firmness, 12% increase in skin tonicity, reduction of TEWL and blurring effect.
Marine Bamboo can be found in Universal Glow Elixir.

Peptides are short strings of amino acids (typically comprising 2–50 amino acids). Amino acids are also the building blocks of proteins, but proteins contain more. The most commonly known proteins in the skin are collagen, elastin and keratin, which are responsible for skin texture and tone. There are hundreds of different peptides, all of which are made from different combinations of amino acids. Peptides, also called polypeptides, are naturally occurring in the skin, are also included in many skin care products. Applied topically, they can penetrate the outer layer of the skin, so instead of sitting on top of the skin, they sink in more deeply. Think of them as messengers for the other cells — they send signals telling the cells to produce collagen and elastin. Benefits include an improved/ stronger skin barrier, reduction in the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, firmer tauter skin, easing of inflammation, repair to damaged skin, and evening out of skin tone. Some peptides are antimicrobial, meaning they can kill bacteria that cause acne. Phoridium Extract (Phormidium Percinicum)
A potent micro blue-green algae, scientifically proven to stimulate cell renewal, cell repair, reduce cell death and inflammation. Clinical results show that it inhibits cell death after exposure to UV by 73%, brightens and evens the skin tone by 42% and prevents sunburn cells from forming by 98%.
Phoridium Extract can be found in Mask Supreme 7-in-1.
Polyhydroxy Acids (PHA)
PHAs (Poly-hydroxy acids) fall under the AHA family. They are much larger in molecule size compared to the more common AHAs (e.g. glycolic and lactic acids). The most well-known PHAs are lactobionic acid, galactose and gluconolactone.
Due to their larger molecule size, PHAs do not penetrate as deeply into the skin but rather work on the outer layers of the skin. PHAs tend to be less sensitising and gentler, compared to other chemical exfoliants.
PHAs are used on the skin for their exfoliating, skin smoothing, moisturizing, and anti-ageing benefits and may be a good alternative for very sensitive skin which cannot tolerate AHAs and BHAs. They are also humectants (meaning they retain moisture reserves) and skin regulating. They have powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. PHAs can even combat glycation, a process that weakens collagen and elastin in skin. PHAs can help lift superficial pigmentation after a breakout clears and are less likely to cause rashes in the process (which can worsen pigmentary issues). Safe for all skin types, including darker skin tones that are prone to hyperpigmentation.
Pomegranate and Neroli Peptide Technology
Low molecular weights of orange blossom peptides and pomegranate extracts for lasting age-defying results. Pomegranate peptides entrap moisture. The isolated the higher weight carbohydrates of pomegranate create a film on the skin’s surface that acts as a barrier enhancement where hydrating spheres can then hold moisture at the surface level, allowing for a noticeable lifting effect with increased suppleness. For this reason, pomegranate peptides create immediate and lasting smoothing effects and optimise skin barrier functions. Clinical data reveals that the lifting effect is instant upon application and lasts for up to 4 hours.
Pomegranate Extract (Punica Granatum)
Pomegranate fruit extract is derived from the pomegranate fruit, which has a thick husk and small pockets of edible seeds and juice inside. Pomegranate is believed to have originated in Iran but is grown in northern India, China, the United States and the Mediterranean area. The fruit grows on trees that are five to eight meters tall. Pomegranate extract has strong antioxidants (ellagic acid). Topical application of products containing pomegranate extract may improve the appearance of wrinkled skin by soothing skin and inhibiting damaging environmental stressors. Studies have shown the efficacy of punica granatum extract in protecting the skin against UVB-induced damage. Using cultured human skin fibroblasts, researchers found that the polyphenols in the extract played a significant role in creating a photoprotective barrier to shield the skin from sun damage and potential skin cancers.
Poria Mushrooms Root Extract (Porio Cocos)
Poria is a type of Chinese fungus/mushroom that helps make the skin less reactive to attack from pollution, helping it to recover more quicky as well as reducing redness and itching. Proven in-vitro activity shows that it helps against loss of cell viability, maintains the cell’s energy level and protects the skin’s cellular structure and barrier function. Demonstrates strong activity against the effects of hyperosmotic stress and photosensitivity. In-vivo testing has shown accelerated skin barrier repair, reduction in UV-generated erythema and anti-itching benefits. Soothes and protects the skin after external stresses. Great for after sun protection and skin barrier restoration.
Porio Cocos extract can be found in Biotech Supreme Pressed Serum.
Prebiotics, which are a food source for the bacteria, are also beneficial to recalibrating the skin microbiome. Probiotics are the “good guys” and prebiotics contain what the “good guys: consume to make sure they thrive and proliferate. Prebiotics also promote a more diverse array of bacteria, and diversity is key to healthy happy skin.
AB Skincare utilises Chlorella Vulgaris, a powerful prebiotic that can found in Cream Supreme Rich.
Probiotics are a host of diverse bacteria ecosystems (over 1,000 species approximately) that reside on skin. This ecosystem of bacteria, fungi and viruses that live on skin is called the microbiome. Research shows that some of these microbes actually promote skin health. They reinforce skin's natural barrier against bad bacteria, balance skin's pH levels and may even help to protect against skin cancers. Probiotics benefit the skin in three ways; First, they act as a protective shield by preventing bad microorganisms from provoking an immune reaction to create a more calming environment for the skin. Second, they produce natural antibiotics called antimicrobial peptides that combat bad bacteria. Lastly, they boost the skin's functionality in dealing with external damaging factors including free radicals, sun, and pollution. These benefits help to reduce inflammation and flare-ups thereby preventing premature ageing.
Postbiotics are metabolic by-products of the natural bacteria function. These postbiotics which consist of enzymes, organic acids, polysaccharides and peptides are powerful molecules that further reinforce skin’s healthy barrier.
Pumpkin Ferment (Cucurbita Pepo)
Fermentation technology capable of enhancing cellular renewal for excellent exfoliating benefits. This fruit is also known as red raspberry and gets its bright red colour from the presence of antioxidant compounds known as anthocyanins. It has strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Raspberry fruit contains a broad mix of antioxidants, including Vitamin C and E, beta-carotene, glutathione, quercetin. It is also a source of a type of polyphenol known as ellagitannins, such as those from antioxidant ellagic acid. It has antibacterial properties; is one of the only fruits that are naturally high in salicylic acid. It can inhibit enzymes in skin that lead to signs of discolouration and loss of firmness. Research has also shown topical application of red raspberry extract can help skin defend itself in the presence of UVB light.
Rubus Idaeus can be found in Biotech Supreme Pressed Serum.
Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS)
Dangerous free radicals (unstable oxygen molecules) generated by UV rays and pollution. ROS attack and react with stable cell molecules, causing cross-linking of collagen and elastin (the main cause of wrinkles) whilst lessening the skin’s ability to repair itself.
AB Skincare products work to reduce ROS in the skin.
Reed Extract (Phragmites Communis)
Phragmites Communis Extract is an extract of the flowering grass that are rich in phenols and polyphenols such as vanillic, ferulic, coumaric acids and in aldehydes such as p-hydroxybenzaldehyde. The leaves and stem contain flavanols, flavones such as luteolin, aconitic acid and more specifically tricin, various alkaloids such as hordenin, gramine, tryptamine, indol-3-ethylamine, and di- and tri-terpenes such as a-amicin. Reeds are 2-3 times richer in vitamin C than orange and anthocyanins.
Reed extract has good antioxidant and skin conditioning properties. It has been shown in studies to decrease the proportion of tyrosinase (the enzyme that triggers melanin production) in skin, so can help with hyperpigmentation issues.
Reed extract can be found in Biotech Supreme Pressed Serum.
A class of synthetically derived chemical compounds related to the Vitamin A. Retinoids are used in varying strengths and formats within skincare for cell proliferation and regeneration. Retinoic acid (also known as Retin-A or Tretinoin) is the strongest, prescription level retinoid that’s often used to treat acne as well as ageing. We naturally have retinoic acid in our skin and this form is 'bio-available' meaning it doesn't need to be converted to work in skin cells. All other retinoids need to be converted by our skin cells once they hit the skin. From strongest to weakest, these are retinaldehyde, retinol and then retinol esters (such as retinyl palmitate).
Retinoids have many benefits. It can increase cell turnover and stimulate collagen and elastin production. It can increase the appearance of firmness by plumping up fine lines and wrinkles. It can improve uneven skin tone, treat pigmentation issues and smooth the surface of skin. It can even help with cystic acne and blemishes.
Retinoids have some side effects – it does not work equally well on everyone. It can increase inflammation, dryness and sensitivity in already delicate/ sensitised skins. Side effects such as redness, dryness and flaking are common. Retinoids increase cell turnover, so can make skin temporarily thinner and therefore more fragile and also increase photosensitivity within the skin, so use of high broad spectrum sunscreen is essential.
Rosehip Seed Oil (Rosa Rubiginosa)
Rosehip Seed Oil is extracted from the seeds of a rose bush found in the southern Andes of Argentina and Chile and is used for its Vitamin A and Vitamin C content, as well as its antioxidant, diuretic and astringent properties. It is considered an anti-ageing ingredient because of its high Vitamin C content and its ability to boost skin regeneration and elasticity. Squalene oil can be found naturally in olives, wheat bran, rice bran, and amaranth oils. It is an emollient with a light non greasy consistency and is readily accepted and easily absorbed by the skin. Chemically, it’s a hydrocarbon, a group of ingredients made of only hydrogen and carbon. It is therefore classed as a ‘pure molecule.’ Squalene is as vital to skin as water is to life. Everyone is born with squalene in their skin – regardless of skin type, age or ethnicity. Skin typically contains around 12% squalene and it is a natural constituent of human sebum. Production of squalene in the skin begins to decrease from the age of 25, resulting in the dehydration that can lead to fine lines, wrinkles and premature ageing. It helps to soften the skin, keeping it supple and preventing moisture loss; helps neutralise UV damage and protects against lipid peroxidation which can damage pores. Squalene has antibacterial, nourishing, hydrating properties and also helps to boost cell regeneration. It is the skin’s principal lipid, natural emollient, built-in moisturiser and skin antioxidant.

Sunflower oil is particularly beneficial for dry, dehydrated, or environmentally compromised skin because its linoleic acid content helps skin synthesise its own lipids including ceramides, visibly repairing its barrier and helping the skin to proper moisture levels. This leads to smoother, healthier-looking skin. Sunflower seed oil also has a natural calming effect on skin, so can be helpful for reducing signs of skin stress or irritation. It also provides antioxidant protection.
